Barraco – real Sicilian craftsmanship wilderness

New natural 100% authentic wines from the west coast of Sicily have just arrived in Prague.

During our travels in Sicily, we came across another interesting small winery, Barraco. It was founded in 2004 when Nino Barraco followed in the footsteps of his ancestors and started growing vines around Marsala on the west coast of Sicily. He gradually bought more plots and today takes care of 14 hectares, which he planted only with the original Sicilian varieties Grillo, Catarratto, Zibibbo, Nero d’Avola, and Pignatello. His vineyards are very diverse, some are clayey with three-million-year-old stones that the locals call "cuti", others even grow directly among sand dunes. But they have one thing in common: Nino works on them in a purely natural way, without irrigation, chemical sprays, and artificial fertilizers, almost without interventions. He only guides his wines on their journey from the vineyard to the cellar, does not clarify, does not filter, and lets nature show what it can do. His philosophy is simple: wine does not have to be perfect, but it must be distinctive and well recognizable, maximally reflecting the place it comes from.

And that is exactly what Barraco wines are like. Wild, untamed, full of very unusual tones, with a strong salinity. No usual harmonious wines, but real craftsmanship wilderness.
