New natural wines from Sardinia have just arrived on our shelves.
Lorenzo and Roberto Pusole are not just ordinary winemakers. Besides cultivating local grape varieties Vermentino and Cannonau, they also engage in semi-wild breeding of original Sardinian pig breeds and grow local varieties of olives and grains. Their organic farm in the Ogliastra region on the eastern coast of Sardinia operates in perfect harmony with nature.
The vineyards between the villages of Baunei and Lotzorai lie on incredibly diverse soils ranging from clay to sandy full of stones and are influenced by the nearby sea and hills over 1 000 m high. Cultivation and wine production are completely natural – sheep take care of the weeds, the vines are not irrigated and thus develop deep roots that absorb not only water but also minerals affecting the taste, chemical sprays and stimulants do not exist here, yield is very low, and only 1–1.5 kg of grapes are harvested from each bush. Even in the cellar, the brothers almost do not interfere with vinification, all wines are left to macerate on the skins, fermentation is spontaneous, and the wine goes into the bottle without filtration.
Thanks to this approach, their wines are very distinctive, straightforward, aromatic, and reflect the terroir and characteristics of individual varieties.
